Fiero
Also said as Triumph, Hard fun
The burst of triumph after beating something hard, often with arms in the air. Nicole Lazzaro used the Italian word for pride in her 2004 "Four Keys to Fun" research, where it is the reward of what she called hard fun.
You cannot hand it out. It needs a real chance of failure first, so if you remove all the frustration you remove this too. Lazzaro's framework came from observing players and is widely used, but it is a descriptive model, not an experimental finding.
Say it
“The boss goes down too easily for the music and banner we gave it. Make the player lose to it at least once on average, then the same fanfare will actually land.”
Where you’ve seen it
Dark Souls is built around it. The words VICTORY ACHIEVED barely matter on their own. They matter because you have been dying to that boss for an hour.
Not to be confused with power fantasy
Fiero is earned against resistance and needs you to have struggled. A power fantasy gives you the strength from the start and lets you enjoy it.
