CRPG

Also said as Computer role-playing game, Western RPG, Isometric RPG

A role-playing game in the tradition of pen and paper: you make a character from stats, and the rules, often with visible dice, decide how they do. It promises a story that answers who you chose to be.

Your stats change what you can say and try, not only how hard you hit. This makes a second playthrough a different game, and also means vast amounts of writing that most players never see.

“Show the dice. A speech check is a d20 plus Charisma against a difficulty of 15, the player sees the percentage before choosing, and a failure opens a different scene, not a dead end.”

Baldur's Gate (1998) put Dungeons & Dragons rules on a computer. Baldur's Gate 3 (2023) rolls a large d20 on screen when you try something in conversation. Disco Elysium (2019) uses two six-sided dice, and lets a failed roll be as interesting as a success.

A CRPG is about the character you built and the choices you made. A JRPG is more about the set character you are travelling with.
