JRPG
Also said as Japanese role-playing game, Turn-based RPG, Console RPG
A party-based role-playing game in the line of Dragon Quest: a set story and cast, turn-based menu battles, and levels that you raise by fighting. It promises a long journey with people you grow fond of.
Its loop is plain: fight, level up, reach the next town. The story pulls you along while the numbers promise that the boss who beat you today will not beat you tomorrow.
Say it
“Standard JRPG battle: four commands, fire deals double to ice enemies, and hitting a weakness grants another turn. A random fight should take 30 seconds at most.”
Where you’ve seen it
Dragon Quest (1986) and Final Fantasy (1987) set the form, and Final Fantasy VII (1997) took it worldwide. In Persona 5 (2016), hitting an enemy's weakness earns you another turn, so the menu becomes a hunt for weak spots.
Not to be confused with crpg
A JRPG usually tells you a set story about set characters. A CRPG usually lets you create your character, and then bends the story around your choices. The name describes a tradition, and some are not made in Japan.
