Landmark

Also said as Orientation point, Navigational landmark

Something big and unique that can be seen from far away, so players always know where they are relative to it. Lost people navigate by these in cities, and players do the same.

Without one, every street looks alike and a player has only the map screen to tell them where they are. With one, they build a picture of the place in their head.

“Everyone gets lost in the old town. Add a clock tower at the north end, tall enough to clear the rooftops from anywhere in the district.”

The Citadel in Half-Life 2 towers over City 17 and stays in view from far across the city, so you always know which way the heart of the place lies.

A landmark tells you where you are. A weenie makes you want to go there. One building can do both, but a mountain you can never reach is only a landmark.

Name a word, or describe what you mean in everyday language.
