Show, don't tell
Also said as Show don't tell
Let the audience see a thing happen instead of being informed of it. Games have a stronger form: let the player do it.
A caption asks to be believed. A town that clears the street when you walk in does not need to ask.
Say it
“Delete the line saying the guards fear her. When she walks into the barracks, have them stop talking, stand up and leave the room.”
Where you’ve seen it
Inside tells its whole story without one word of dialogue or text. You work out what is being done to those people from what you see them made to do.
Not to be confused with environmental storytelling
Show, don't tell is the general rule, for any scene in any medium. Environmental storytelling is one way of following it, using the place.
