Button prompt

Also said as Controller glyphs, Input icons, Press A to

The on-screen icon that tells you which button to press. Glyphs are the icons themselves, and they have to match the device in your hands, because pads label the same positions differently.

Xbox's A is at the bottom of the diamond, and Nintendo's A is on the right. A prompt drawn for the wrong pad is worse than no prompt at all, since it confidently sends you to the wrong button.

“Show glyphs for whichever device was used last, and switch the moment that changes, even mid-prompt. Read them from the player's current bindings, not from a fixed list.”

Steam Input can hand a game the right icons for the pad in use, yet many PC games still ship only Xbox prompts, which leaves everyone else translating in their heads.

Remapping changes which button does what. Prompts have to follow it: if someone has moved jump to Y, the prompt must say Y.
