Waypoint
Also said as Objective marker, Quest marker, Map pin
A marker that shows exactly where to go next, usually with a distance. It can sit on a compass, on the map or in the world.
It removes any chance of getting lost, and with it the need to look around, ask or remember. A strong waypoint turns exploring into following an arrow, so decide whether you want that.
Say it
“Show a waypoint on the compass only, and put a distance on it within 50 m. The player should have to look up from the compass to find the actual door.”
Where you’ve seen it
Dead Space's locator draws a line of light along the floor to your objective at the press of a button, which keeps it inside the world. Skyrim marks your quest on its compass. Elden Ring only rarely gives you a marker, and players keep notes instead.
Not to be confused with signifier
A signifier hints that something can be done. A waypoint points to the place you've been told to go.
