Camera lookahead
Also said as Camera lead, Forward focus
The camera leans toward where you are heading, so you see more of what is coming than what you have passed.
A camera centred on the player shows as much behind as ahead, which is half wasted. Fast games become unfair if danger can arrive before you can see it.
Say it
“Lead the camera 200 px in the direction of travel, ease it over a second, and do not snap when the player turns around.”
Where you’ve seen it
Super Mario World shifts the view toward the direction Mario is facing, so more of the screen shows what is ahead of him.
Not to be confused with dead zone
Lookahead moves the camera ahead of the player on purpose. A dead zone keeps the camera still while the player moves within a box.
