Coyote time
Also said as Ledge forgiveness, Late jump
The short moment after running off a ledge when a jump still works. It is named after Wile E. Coyote, who hangs in the air until he looks down.
Players press jump when they believe they are on the edge, and they are often a few frames past it. Without coyote time, the game punishes a press they made on time.
Say it
“Give the jump 100 ms of coyote time so a press just past the ledge still counts. Do not show it to the player.”
Where you’ve seen it
Celeste has it, and its creator Maddy Thorson listed it first in a 2020 thread on the game's hidden forgiveness.
Not to be confused with jump buffering
Coyote time forgives a press that is too late, after leaving the ground. Buffering forgives one that is too early, before reaching it.
